Ben Rice is a British bass and recent graduate of the University of York.
Ben spent three years as an undergraduate, singing under Alex Ashworth and Susan Young, before completing Robert Hollingworth’s Solo Voice Ensemble Singing Masters course. During his Masters, Ben was Bass Choral Scholar at the York Minster, and continues to frequently sing with the choir for services and commemorations.
Ben is a member of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, the Charles Wood Singers, the Rodolfus Choir under Ralph Allwood, and the Ebor Singers. Last year Ben was part of Cohort 12 of the Genesis Sixteen, under Eamonn Dougan and Harry Christophers. Ben will sing this year as part of the Southwell Music Festival Genesis Quartet, under the direction of Marcus Farnsworth.
Recent solo work includes Handel’s Dixit Dominus, William Walton’s The Twelve, Fauré’s Requiem, Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Requiem, Bach’s St John Passion as Pilate and Jesus, and performing as Polyphemus in Handel’s Acis and Galatea, alongside smaller scale chamber group work.
Ben works in the current Choir School of the York Minster’s Music Department, supplementing a burgeoning freelance career, both in York and further afield.
